I'm looking to buy a Diesel Galaxy. After nearly being stung with a Galaxy with a misfire problem I have been reading through the Forums and I am amazed at how complicated and expensive this is to fix. Also I am amazed how Ford dealers are referring customers to VW for diagnosis.

Is "Misfire problems" a common fault with the Galaxy/ Sharan or just a common post on here and it appears that way?

I was also looking to buy an auto. A lot of people are saying the auto gearboxes are a bit suspect.

Should I buy an auto or play it safe with a manual?

Thanks for any advice

Play it safe with a manual! The auto box on the diesels is notorious for problems that prove expensive to fix. The reason that you may have been told to go to VW is that the Galaxy was developed by VW and uses their technology, apart from the Galaxy 4-cylinder petrol models which use a Ford engine (but still use VW for almost everything else)

its like anything with any car,you will only hear the bad things about cars when the problem arises, there does seem to be a lot of posts on here about auto gearboxes,

the reason fords refer people to vw(mainly tdi owners)is because its a vw engine,

personally id go for a Manuel(but ive never owned an auto)so im being biased,

no doubt youve searched in exchange and mart, try searching in the friday ad aswell for a shalaxy.

I know that the Galaxy is based on the Sharan and uses the same engine. I just think it is a bit poor if Ford have to refer a Ford car to another badge for support.

I've got an auto Pajero and have got lazy. I really like aiming it instead of having to drive it, especially in heavy traffic. Causes a bit of a problem when I drive like a woman in the other car which is a manual when it starts to "kangaroo" when I forget to dip the clutch :16:

You've convinced me that the auto box is out and the left boot is back in.

Is the misfire problem a common problem?

ours is a 03 plated 1.9tdi auto, so far so good except for the rumbling noise from the front somewhere? and the shitty attempts at spare wheel change in the wet, lol. Only had two new tyres and break pad changes so far, she does have the unusual habit of going into different gears sometimes though, lol.

Have you tested the coil pack? Common problem on all galaxys. search the forum for coil pack, there is an easy way to tell involving a some spray mist in the dark with engine running.
